PROJECTPort of Assab Modernization and Expansion
PROJECT COST2,000,000,000.00
COMPLETION DATE04/07/2023
PROJECT INFORMATIONHaaving Ethiopia recently regained access to the sea through the Red Sea Region, a plan would be put forward to develop the Port of Assab to make it comply qith the requirements of a modern commercial port.

Stage 1: Conduct a feasibility study: Before undertaking any major expansion or modernization efforts, it is essential to conduct a thorough feasibility study to determine the current capacity of the port, identify its strengths and weaknesses, and assess the feasibility and cost of any proposed upgrades. This study will also consider potential environmental and social impacts of the expansion.

Stage 2: Upgrade port infrastructure: This includes upgrading and modernizing the port's cargo-handling equipment, such as cranes and forklifts, as well as improving the port's navigation and communication systems to increase efficiency and safety. The port's berths, quays, and storage facilities may also need to be expanded or upgraded to accommodate larger ships and more cargo.

Dredging and deepening: To accommodate larger ships, the port may need to be dredged and deepened to provide deeper water for ships to dock. This part will also include the dredging of the existing harbor and the construction of a new, deeper harbor adjacent to the existing one.

Develop new infrastructure: In addition to upgrading the existing port infrastructure, new infrastructure to support the expanded port will be constructed. This could includes building new roads and rail links to the port, as well as constructing new warehouses, storage yards, and other facilities to handle the increased volume of cargo.

Stage 3: Considering the port of Assab will be the primary port of operations of the Ethiopian Navy, a new section, separated from the commercial part, would be cosntructed. This section, off limits to the public traffic. will have docking spaces for several small, medium and large military vessels, loading cranes, maintenance areas and 2 dry docks for bigger repairs and a Naval HQ, including offices, meeting rooms, intelligence and oeprational control areas and crew living quarters and training grounds/facilities.
