PROJECT INFORMATION | The Tourism Infrastructure project in the Azores and Algarve aims to transform these regions into premier sustainable tourism destinations by significantly improving and expanding essential infrastructure and amenities. This comprehensive initiative will focus on enhancing transportation networks, accommodations, tourist attractions, and public facilities while preserving the natural environment and cultural heritage of the regions. The project involves upgrading and expanding airports in Ponta Delgada, Horta, and Faro to accommodate increased tourist traffic and improve passenger experience. Additionally, seaport facilities will be enhanced to support cruise tourism and yacht charters. Improvements to road networks will ensure better connectivity between tourist attractions and accommodations, including widening existing roads, constructing new routes, and enhancing signage. The development of public transportation options, such as buses and shuttle services, will provide efficient and eco-friendly travel for tourists. Accommodations will see a significant boost with grants given to the construction of new hotels and resorts, emphasizing eco-friendly designs and sustainable practices. Existing accommodations will also be upgraded to meet modern standards and enhance the guest experience. The project will introduce alternative lodging options such as eco-lodges, boutique hotels, and holiday rentals, offering unique and sustainable accommodation choices for tourists. Tourist attractions will be diversified with the development of eco-friendly sites like hiking trails, nature reserves, and wildlife sanctuaries to promote sustainable tourism. Cultural heritage sites, including historic buildings, museums, and traditional villages, will be restored and enhanced to attract cultural tourists. Recreational facilities, such as beaches, marinas, golf courses, and adventure parks, will be built and upgraded to offer a wide range of activities for visitors. Public facilities, including visitor centers in key tourist areas, will provide information, assistance, and services to tourists, promoting local attractions and events. Improvements to public amenities, such as restrooms, picnic areas, and parking facilities, in tourist hotspots will enhance the overall visitor experience. Environmental conservation is a cornerstone of this project, with sustainable practices implemented in all aspects, including energy-efficient buildings, waste management systems, and water conservation measures. Natural landscapes and ecosystems will be protected and preserved through conservation efforts and regulations, and responsible tourism practices will be promoted to minimize environmental impact. The project will actively engage the community by collaborating with local businesses, communities, and stakeholders to ensure that it meets regional needs and promotes local economic growth. Public awareness campaigns will educate residents and tourists about sustainable tourism practices and the benefits of the project. The budget covers expenses for transportation infrastructure improvements, grants for new accommodations and tourist attractions, environmental conservation efforts, and community engagement initiatives. Overall, the project will take 18 RP months (approximately 8 real-life weeks) to complete, ensuring the efficient development and enhancement of tourism infrastructure in the Azores and Algarve, promoting sustainable tourism growth, and improving the overall visitor experience while preserving the regions' natural and cultural heritage. |
