| PROJECT INFORMATION | TOP SECRET JOINT BASE KING OSCAR Department of Defence South African and Antarctic Command Task Force Polarsköld DESCRIPTION Swedish Antarctica has long been disputes territory, albeit governed by international law ratified by the Global Assembly. A total shift in the way Sweden is governed has emphasised a need for a substantial uplift in overseas territorial defence, particularly in the Sub-Antarctic. A comprehensive strategic review concluded that existing research-oriented facilities were insufficient to guarantee long-term sovereignty, access control and control in such a contested region. The base will serve as a primary air base for Antarctica, as well as home to a permanent naval flotilla. LOCATION Princess Elizabeth Land, Antarctica -68.57646, 77.96868 FACILITIES Given the extreme environment this facility is likely to be subject to, particular effort has been made to ensure the entire facility is temperature-controlled and hardened to withstand the year-round seasonal challenges. As a brief overview the complex of the facility will include: - Joint Base Command Bunker - Air Operations Command Suite - Naval Operations Command Suite - Administrative Building - Military Hospital - Military Police Station - Communications and Security Centre - Barracks (incl. Standard Facilities) - Recreational Facilities (Cinema, Gym, Swimming Pool, Physiotherapy etc.) - Resource Storage - Nuclear Power, Purified Water and Utilities Station - Ammunition Storage Complexes - Warehouses (x5) - Vehicle Parking Lot - 11,800ft Hardened Heated Runway - 9100ft Compacted Groomed Skiway - Heated Taxiways - Arrestor Cable System - Polar-rated Airfield Lighting and Navigation Systems - Ice and Snow Control Depot (x2) - Hardened Sealed Aircraft Shelters (x24) - Heavy Aircraft Maintenance Hangar - Medium Aircraft Hangars (x2) - Cold-Weather Aviation Maintenance - Petroleum, Oils and Lubricants Storage and Handling Facility - De-icing Facility - Air Traffic Control Tower - Ice-Protected Deep-Water Harbour - Reinforced Breakwater - Ice-Cleared Navigation Channel - Heavy Piers (x3) - Ice-Resistant Floating Docks (x2) - Enclosed Heated Dry Dock - Naval Maintenance Hangars (x2) - Heavy Lift Operations Area SECURITY As standard the facility will be covered with secure CCTV networks to minimise blind spots on the exterior and prioritise high security areas within any buildings or facilities; this includes polar-rated thermal imaging. All buildings, hangers and facilities are secured by gateway pass doors supplied and activated by the Swedish Department of Defence only. A multi-layered barbed wire fence surrounds the facility and any external monitoring positions. Adequate road and pedestrian networks surround and allow travel within the base, with heating elements beneath the surface. Any vehicle gates are secured by recessed traffic control measures. Emergency back up generators secure the supply of electricity, gas, water and sewage if necessary. Internal burglary and fire alarm and suppression systems installed. Guard towers are strategically located around the perimeter to monitor movement with overlapping coverage. |
