PROJECT INFORMATION | Swedish Armed Forces Headquarters Antarctic Defence Force Marion Island Antarctic Base (Marion Island AB) DESCRIPTION The objective of the Swedish central government in Stockholm has long been the capability of its Armed Forces on a global scale, particularly the capability to defend itself both at home on the mainland and abroad to protect Swedish overseas territory. At present the focus is the financing of the Antarctic Defence Force providing the necessary facilities to ensure the longevity of the branch on the opposite side of the globe. Marion Island, apart of the Prince Edward Islands, has been designated for the construction of this base due to it's strategic positioning, central position within the Swedish Strategic Defence Network and geographic benefits to reduce costs. LOCATION Marion Island of the Prince Edward Islands, Transvaal Cove Coordinates -46.8768, 37.8613 FACILITIES Matching some of the specifications of the constructed Kungsbacka Naval Base in Sweden. In order to facilitate the expected traffic and protection of infrastructure water, electricity, gas and sewage treatment and monitoring facilities are in place as well as substantial amounts of dredging, coastal reinforcement and defences will be positioned and/or constructed to allow for the following: - Administrative Building - Military Hospital - Military Police Station - Fire Management Station - Communications and Security Centre - Maintenance Facility - Barracks (incl. Standard Facilities) - Recreational Facilities (Cinema, Gym, Swimming Pool, Physiotherapy etc.) - Resource Storage - Petroleum, Oils and Lubricants Storage and Handling Facility - 10,500ft Paved Runway - Helicopter Landing Pad - Temperature Controlled Hangars (4x) - Air Traffic Control - Ballistic Missile Silos (and WMD Storage) - 500ft Dock (x6) - 1000ft Dock (x1) - Vehicle Parking Lot SECURITY As standard the facility will be covered with secure CCTV networks to minimise blind spots on the exterior and prioritise high security areas within any buildings or facilities. All buildings, hangers and facilities are secured by gateway pass doors supplied and activated by the Swedish Department of Defence only. A barbed wire fence surrounds the facility and any external monitoring positions. Adequate road and pedestrian networks surround and allow travel within the base. Any vehicle gates are secured by recessed traffic control measures. Emergency back up generates secure the supply of electricity, gas, water and sewage if necessary. Internal burglary and fire alarm and suppression systems installed. |
