Nitrogen Mustard is categorised by the Defence Research Administration as a blister agent; a compound which causes severe skin, eye and mucosal pain and irritation. These agents have the ability to cause severe chemical burns, resulting in painful water blisters on the bodies of those affected resulting in their classification as a chemical weapon and subsequent prohibition under the Resolution for Strategic Ordnance Prohibition (STOP) passed by the Global Assembly - which, to date, has not has its register ratified by the Kingdom of Sweden in any form.

Nitrogen Mustards were produced in the 1920s and 1930s and can smell fishy, musty, soapy, or fruity. They can be in the form of an oily-textured liquid, a vapour (the gaseous form of a liquid), or a solid. Nitrogen mustards are liquids at normal room temperature where they can appear clear, pale amber, or yellow-coloured when in liquid or solid form.

Through Project Mercury the Defence Research Administration fundamentally intend to weaponise Nitrogen Mustards in any available chemical composition for the dispersal through various methods; which include but are not limited to oral gaseous/liquid vapour intake, oral pure liquid intake or other liquid contamination, skin exposure through vapour and skin exposure through liquid. These methods will be tested, analysed and conditioned for testing various dispersal methods which will include the contamination of otherwise safe liquids, developed chemical weapon warheads and other missile systems (capable of statistic and mobile deliverance), handheld delivery methods. In conjunction with this the administration will also research the effect these weapons may have on the human body and methods in-which to prevent friendly contact upon deliverance, in addition to first aid and secondary medical treatment for exposure with detailed analysis into the signs and symptoms. The team will develop further into long-term health effects, mortality, antidotes and exposure protection.
