TransSüd Corridor Initiative
Cape Town

DESCRIPTION
The newly developed TransSüd Corridor Initiative is made possible by the Road Safety and Modernisation Act (South Africa) 2007. Cape Town's major local roadways serve as critical arteries connecting residential areas, industrial zones and commercial centres. Many sections of this key infrastructure suffer from extremely deterioration, outdated traffic control, poor night-time visibility and inconsistent road markings. The purpose of the TransSüd Corridor Initiative is to be major cities across South Africa to a minimum stand with a large investment. This project aims to deliver high-impact improvements quickly, aligning key roads with Swedish standards for markings, signage, lighting and resurfacing.

SCOPE OF WORKS
Resurfacing of the approximately 200km of trunk roadways will include the laying of polymer-modified asphalt for durability and skid resistance, as well as minor shoulder repairs included where feasible. Road markings will be upgraded to Swedish-standard lane, cycle and pedestrian marking with reflective paint for improved visibility, particularly at night. Signage will be reflective for regulatory, warning and directional signage to ensure compliance with Swedish visibility and positioning standards. Street lighting will be upgraded to install energy-efficient alternatives and focus on intersections, pedestrian crossings and accident hot spots. Finally traffic signals will be replaced with digital signals with adaptive controllers at major intersections where available.

BUDGET
Resurfacing at the expected standard to cost in the region of $400mil.
Road markings and signage at the expected standard to cost in the region of $85mil.
Street lighting at the expected standard to cost in the region of $130mil.
Traffic signals and management at the expected standard to cost in the region of $70mil.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES
The purpose of the project is clear and the expected outcomes are immediate safety improvements as a direct result of better road visibility, markings and signage, reduced night-time accidents with upgraded lighting, improved traffic flow at major intersections using adaptive signals, enhanced urban aesthetics with resurfaced trunk roads and standardised signage and foundation for future Swedish-standard upgrades in subsequent phases.

IMPLEMENTATION
The works will be completed with prioritisation first focussed on high-traffic trunk roads and accident-prone sections, working in segments to minimise traffic disruption. Where possible procurement will occur from local businesses and trades to maximise local economic benefit and continuous supervision and evaluation will take place to ensure compliance with the specifications and budget outlines. Local engagement will occur with the community to inform resident, businesses and services of the works and the schedules.
