PROJECT INFORMATIONDar es Salaam Metro

Consistently ranked within the top 10 fastest growing cities in the world for the past 2 decades, Dar es Salaam’s current metro population of 8.5 million is predicted to boom to 13.9 million within the next 10 years.

Dar lacks sufficient urban transport infrastructure to provide for its current population, leaving it significantly unprepared to accommodate for further population growth.

The Dar es Salaam Metro is a transformative urban transport project designed to significantly enhance mobility in Tanzania’s largest city, planning for future population growth and with capacity for further expansion. Spanning 124 kilometres entirely underground, the system will comprise 42 underground stations, including 11 key interchange hubs, and operate across five lines.

Targeting a daily ridership of 1.8 million passengers, the metro will run 24/7, adhering to modern engineering, safety, and quality standards. The system will utilise 130 semi-automated trains, each capable of carrying up to 1,000 passengers, with services running at two-minute intervals.

Supporting infrastructure includes four depots—two large centralised facilities for heavy maintenance and two satellite depots for light servicing and overnight stabling.

The total investment is estimated at $12 billion (PPP-adjusted), comprising $9.5 billion for civil works, $2 billion for imported rolling stock, and $0.5 billion for depot development. The project is set to be a cornerstone of urban renewal and sustainable mobility in East Africa.
