Red-Green Coalition
Red-Green Coalition (RGC) is an environmentalist communist front of the Eco-Socialist Alliance (ESA) in the National Assembly. With more than 6.2 million members, the mass organization is Thailand’s largest anti-capitalist movement committed to preserving, restoring, and improving the natural environment, earth system elements, and biodiversity. It posits that the capitalist economic system is fundamentally incompatible with sustainability to ensure long-term human flourishing and security. Accordingly, the working class and ordinary people must dismantle capitalism to establish a new society based on social ownership of the means of production and restore the commons.
The communist front is critical of the green economy and environmental economics due to their tolerance of capitalism. In this regard, liberal green politics are merely tweaking a fundamentally unsustainable system built on ecological degradation and over-production tendency. RGC is also known for its active community gardening projects and members’ participation in environmental volunteering. The mass organization has direct ties to Green Thailand Council, a national think tank. Its members often hold elected managerial positions in the Ministry of Resources and Environment, especially the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation.
The mass organization frequently provides locally produced ingredients for communal kitchens across Thailand, as its members grow edible plants. They campaign for animal liberation concurrently with workers’ self-emancipation. RGC philosophically argues that all animals have the same morally relevant characteristics as human infants, senile people, comatose, and cognitively disabled people. Therefore, an animal deserves the right to be granted moral status, not to be killed or suffer unless necessary for human survival. It campaigns for ethically harvesting animal meat and organs while supporting animal welfare and a safe environment for animal husbandry.
