Minister,

I am reaching out to you in a personal capacity, given the precarious relationship between our nations. I have recently been appointed as the director of the Suez-Alexandria Freight Authority, a new international shipping company based in the cities of Alexandria, Suez, and Port Said. As I am sure you are aware, considering its importance to international trade, Thai ships are still officially banned from transiting the Suez Canal. This ban is, to the best of my understanding, indefinite.

I understand that the Thai government may be very keen to establish new international trade routes, especially considering its track record with global investment. If this is the case, access to the Suez could be indispensable. Shorter transit times in higher volumes equal a more unrestricted flow of international trade, furthering the best interests of all Thai citizens, as well as those of people worldwide. Now, I am in a unique position. I have not only the blessings of the Egyptian government to transit the Suez and all Egyptian waters free of inspection or fee, but also a growing fleet of freighter ships capable of long-haul routes globally.

As an organization, the Suez-Alexandria Freight Authority is willing to offer an opportunity to the Thai government. At no cost, the Suez-Alexandria Freight Authority will undertake and execute Thai trade routes, particularly those through the Suez Canal, and establish a Regional Headquarters Office in Bangkok. This would make Bangkok the definitive regional maritime trade hub, with all of our services operating through there. This would also open up future opportunities for Egyptian investment into Thai trade and port infrastructure. In exchange, the Suez-Alexandria Freight Authority would become the sole carrier for all Thai goods out of the nation by sea.

These are only preliminary concepts- if Thailand may be interested in these offerings, I would hope to hear back from you to schedule a call.

Best,
Ibrahim Tarabin

Director Tarabin,

On behalf of the Ministry of Commerce, I extend our sincere gratitude for your offer to become Thailand’s main carrier in international trading. We understand your noble intention and how such an agreement could foster a more conducive environment for potential reconciliation between Thailand and Egypt.

Unfortunately, the Confederal Thai Government, while normally delegated to represent our Socialist Republic in international relations, is prohibited from decision-making regarding certain topics not allowed by our grassroots sovereign entities. While I wholeheartedly appreciate your offer, a confederal agreement regrettably outlaws the confederal apparatus in any attempt toward reconciliation with Egypt without an explicit, written approval of 75 percent of all community assemblies. Please do not take this personally, and it does not mean that I, as the Minister of Commerce, have any grievance or hatred toward your nation and its beautiful people.

The circumstances regarding the strained nature of the Thai-Egyptian relations stemmed directly from the unprecedented event, including my older brother, the Rotating Coordinator, and the late Egyptian diplomat. As I am a member of the former’s family, the National Assembly has limited my ability to fully represent Thailand internationally without a supermajority approval by my Ministry’s internal workers’ council. On 18 February 2007, a general election will occur and a new cabinet will take office in the Confederal Government. I sincerely apologize for my lack of mandate and wish you the best if your esteemed organization wants to discuss this important topic with the next administration.

Best Regards,

Yingluck Shinawatra
