Dear Ambassador,

The Spanish administration wishes to convey its concern regarding certain information circulating on social media platforms, including twitter, which appears to reference Spain in a manner that may not accurately reflect the facts.

In light of the importance both our nations place on transparency, mutual respect, and the preservation of constructive bilateral relations, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Konrad Frías would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you or your representatives at the earliest possible convenience. The purpose of the meeting would be to discuss these communications, clarify their origins, and ensure that both parties maintain a shared understanding grounded in verified information.

Spain remains committed to the spirit of cooperation that characterizes our long-standing partnership and is confident that an open exchange will contribute positively to continued mutual trust. Failure to attend this meeting at a reasonable time will result in the Swedish Embassy being expelled from Spain, and all diplomatic communications being closed.

Warmest Regards,
Konrad Frías
Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation

Dear Minister Konrad Frías,

Thank you for your prompt correspondence.

Our realm has long strived for the continued strength of diplomacy and has made countless steps throughout numerous administrations to push such a core value on an international scale. In it's purest form our amendments to the Vienna Convention via the Global Assembly set in stone some key assurances that diplomacy would prosper even in the darkest of times. I have to express, Minister, that the tone of your recent communication containing the threat of expulsion if we fail to engage with your request is wholly inconsistent with the principles of the convention and unbecoming of a European partner. We do not engage with threatening behaviour on a diplomatic level.

Sweden operates on verifiable intelligence and we consistently aim to prevent potential conflict, not incite it.

Until such time as Spain is prepared to engage in constructive dialogue free from ultimatums or threats, the Embassy will limit its engagements to purely essential consular services. We will, simultaneously, begin the withdrawal of our mission staff at your request. In accordance with the Vienna Convention, of which you are a signatory, you must provide adequate notification informing the sending State of persona non grata in the form of two separate forms of correspondence, the second sent no sooner than three days after the first. If this is the route you are destined to follow, please make it clear in any followup correspondence so we can begin the necessary processes.

I must stress how disappointed I am, on behalf of the Bureau for European Affairs, to see your government almost spontaneously and systematically dismantle European relations one by one. Sweden is your starter, Portugal appears to be your main course and I can only presume the rest of Europe follow for your dessert?

Unprovoked. Unprofessional. Dangerous.

Regards,
Teppo Tauriainen
Ambassador for Sweden to Spain

Dear Ambassador,

Spain has received your communication with due attention. While we respect Sweden’s dedication to diplomacy and to the principles of the Vienna Convention, we must express our disappointment at both the tone and the insinuations contained in your message.

Let me be clear: Spain’s prior correspondence was not a threat, but a formal communication reflecting legitimate and pressing concerns. It was issued in accordance with established diplomatic practice and with the expectation that such matters would be met with engagement—not public rebuke. To characterize our approach as unprofessional or dangerous is neither accurate nor conducive to the resolution of the situation at hand.

Spain remains steadfast in its commitment to diplomacy conducted on the basis of mutual respect. That commitment, however, requires reciprocity. The decision to scale back engagement and begin withdrawal of personnel is a matter for the Swedish Government, though we consider it both premature and regrettable.

We strongly advise that Sweden reconsider this course and re-engage through established diplomatic channels, without inflammatory language or unilateral assumptions. Spain continues to value its bilateral relations with all European partners, but it will not accept misrepresentation of its intentions or methods nor will we accept false information being broadcasted

Spain remains available to discuss the matter directly, in a manner consistent with the dignity and obligations of both our nations.

Warmest Regards,
Konrad Frías
