Exercise Objective Exercise Gaganshakti-05's overall mission objective is to practise combined air defence and security operations.
Exercise Details Exercise Gaganshakti-05 would be implemented to improve the GIASF's air defence and reaction abilities. EG5 would be implemented to not disrupt civilian activities, and to .Week One Week One would be focused on, first, preparation for the upcoming exercise, then on interception in permissive and non-permissive environments and with a wide range of Rules Of Engagements. Day One to Three Day One through Three would consist of a work-up period, aimed at enabling the exercise force to conduct operations as planned for four weeks. Aircraft would undergo deep maintenance, flight crews would review SOPs and undergo briefings, ground crews would work towards optimising squadron sortie generation rate and availability rates. Flight time for pilots and airframes involved in the exercise would be reduced. Day Four to Seven Day Four through Seven would consist of BLUFOR (No. 4 Squadron, No. 20 Squadron and No. 701 Squadron) operating in a defensive matter against REDFOR (No. 5 Squadron, No. 9 Squadron and No. 4 ACS). REDFOR's goal is to harass and monitor the airspace over and around Lucknow, using both SU-30MKI and EL/M-2080 'Green Pine' RADAR; BLUFOR's goal is to, using A-50EI AEW&C working with Su-30MKI, conduct interceptions of intruding fighters (or civilian aircraft taking part in the exercise unknowingly). Week Two Day One Day One would be a short rest for flight crews and a short maintenance period. Day Two to Three Day Two and Three would feature groups of two to eight fighters engaging in BFM or 'dogfights'. Each side would approach the other at 10km, with the aim of manoeuvring to get behind their opponent/s. Day Four to Six Day Four through Six would consist of groups of two to eight fighters engaging in BFM or 'dogfights'. Each side would approach the other at 10km, with the aim of engaging the other side with any simulated short-range weaponry possible, including all-aspect weapons like the R-73. Day Seven Day Seven would be a debrief for all personnel involved. Week Three Day One to Four Day One through Four would feature BLUFOR (No. 4 Squadron, No. No. 20 Squadron) and REFOR (No. 5 Squadron, No. 9 Squadron) approaching each other and engaging in simulated beyond visual range combat in a variety of scenarios, situations and conditions. Day Five Day Five would consist of single-ship, two-ship and three-ship fighter formations (from the squadrons listed under ORBAT) engaging in 'hide-and-seek' simulated BVR and WVR combat. Day Six and Seven Day Six and Seven would have small formations of fighters (from the squadrons listed under ORBAT) engaging in simulated air defence and interception missions, with one AEW&C from No. 701 Squadron acting as commander for each side. Week Four Day One to Four Day One through Four would consist of debriefings and preliminary analysis of the activities conducted during EG5. Further analysis would be conducted at the Squadron, Wing and Command level across the GIASF once the exercise had officially ended.
