Mayotte is an overseas department, region and single territorial collectivity in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and the coast of Mozambique belonging to the French Republic. Mayotte broke away from the Comoros Islands and remained with France after the Comoros Islands declared its independence in a referendum in 1974. Since the break away from the Comoros Islands, the overseas department has been rife with illegal immigration from the other islands belonging to the Comoros Islands collectivity, as a result of immigration from neighboring islands, 48% of the population are foreign nationals, crime was at a high with muggings, robberies and gang violence, poverty at an all time high with 89% of the population living under the poverty line and unemployment levels being poor with 34% of the inhabitants between the age of 15 and 64 not having a job after the population of Mayotte increased from 45,000 to 157,000 between 1975 and 2001.
Enough was enough said the local population with protests being formed by those originally belonging to the island and they took to the streets across the capital Mamoudzou demanding more be done to stop the issues surrounding the population on the island and help those in need. Protestors marched towards the headquarters of the Departmental Council of Mayotte calling for the President of the Departmental Council to resign and leave the country and return to mainland France. Only a small security detachment of National Police officers remained on the island with the majority of police officers taking part in protests and strikes across the island due to the lack of investment from the central French Government. The protestors numbered in the thousands and were being led by 26-year old Mélanie Haillet who was a former police officer who had been giving interviews to local news stations after leaving her job to demand more for the local population and to curb immigration.
