EXERCISE POLISHED CRESCENT-1999 Exercise Members: Air Force of the Republic of Turkey Top Secret/Secure Information

Training Exercise Background
As to increase the ability of the Turkish Air Forces in the event of a declared war along Turkish Borders, the Turkish Air Force will be conducting a Practice Ground Strike Operation simulating the bombing of mobile military targets such as Armored vehicles and SPAA vehicles. This will include the 1st Airforce Strike Squadron, 2nd Airforce Attack Squadron, and the 3rd Airforce Attack Squadron.

Deployed (Air) Forces
F-16A/B Fighting Falcon: 15 F-5 Phantom: 22 F-111 Aardvark: 35 90 Pilots and 280 Ground Crew and Maintenance Personnel

Logistics

All three Squadrons are based within Ankara Airbase temporarily and will conduct this exercise in uninhabited eastern Provinces that are off limits to the Public in order to avoid accidental casualties. All Aircraft will always depart fully fueled and with their basic armaments under the supervision of Airforce Command. The exercise would be secret and files regarding its information would be secured by the NIO.

All pilots would be briefed on the training exercise with special detail to the fact that some targets may be camouflaged and not on ground radar as to simulate a operation in the local desert/Arid environment found around the Middle East.

Pilots would be briefed on the weapons to be used during the operation with F-16s being equipped with General Electric M61A1 20mm six-barrel cannons and two wingtip Sidewinder or Sparrow air-to-air missiles as well as Maverick Air to surface missiles. F-5 Phantoms would carry two 20-mm cannons in the fuselage nose. Two AIM-9 Sidewinderat the wingtips, and 7000 pounds of Bullpup air-to-surface missiles. Finally the F-111 would carry 25,000 pounds of bombs:
F-111 Bombs carried.

All squadrons of Aircraft would take off, circling the airport before leaving together. The F-16 and F-5 Phantom aircraft would escort the F-111 To their target. This process will be repeated twice.

The Aircraft now would approach their destination unimpeded and spot mobile unarmored targets in the Desert which were moving at around 50kph(31mph) in a straight line un camouflaged. The targets were Pickups commonly used by Terrorists and Insurgent groups and it would ordered that 5 F-16 AIrcraft would detach from the squadron and fire apon the training target(Unmanned, Remotely Controlled) with Maverick Air to Surface Missiles with all hitting the mobile target, blowing it to pieces. The F-16s would then link up with the joint Squadron and make their way towards immobile targets around 10-15 Miles away. The Target would be a fake “town” and with fake targets representing enemy Radar installations and Armored Vehicles(M48 Tanks-Decommissioned). The F-111 Aardvarks would then unleash their payload simultaneously with multiple runs over the site, completely destroying the targets and teaching the pilots how to properly attack ground targets.

The Aircraft would then return to the Aiport and Readied for the next phase of the operation.​

Aircraft would be immediate recalled from Training Operation Polished Crescent due to Turkish-Israeli-Palestinian Crisis, with pilots learning valuable skills in how to target unarmored, armored, and disguised ground targets. Aircraft would be deployed to Adana AFB and Ankara National AFB.
