CONTEXT

A major attack on Parliament occurred on Canadian soil in broad daylight. Ottawa itself was under attack by militants who were, and still are in other parts of the country, attempt a coup de etat. The King and Prime Minister are feared dead or seriously injured. At the request of the Acting Prime Minister of Canada, President Gore has ordered the mobilization of Delta Force to assist Canadian special forces (Joint Task force 2) in hunting down and eliminating rebel leadership in the Canadian wilderness. Before deploying from Fort Bragg, the gravity of the situation was explained to the operators: a successful coup de etat in Canada would require direct American intervention in Canada and would cost tens-of-thousands of lives directly and indirectly. The mission of the operators were to help the Canadians prevent that from happening.

After the mission briefing, the pilots and gunners for the Black Hawks prepared their aircraft and performed preflight checks as the special forces operators gathered their weaponry and equipment. Within 90 minutes the operators would all be airborne (11 operators per helicopter, plus 2 gunners and 2 pilots). The Federal Aviation Administration had grounded all flights to and from Canada, but an obvious exception was made for military aircraft. Only about a dozen individuals at the White House and the Pentagon would have the intimate details of when and where the operators were travelling. From Fort Bragg, the helicopters were flying directly to CFB Uplands in Canada, which was deemed as a safe staging place for Delta Force.

The helicopters were fully fueled and would fly relatively straight from Fort Bragg to CFB Uplands (while taking obvious course corrections through the Appalachian Mountains). The helicopters flew at their cruising speed of 175 miles per hour and an altitude of 15,000 feet. The helicopters would refuel at Andrews Air Force Base and fly directly from there, without transponders and maintaining radio silence, to CFB Uplands.

TOP SECRET

The Delta Force aircraft securely contacted the Canadian Air Force as they prepared to enter into Canadian airspace, and requested permission to enter Canada. If they were granted permission, the helicopters would continue flying to CFB Uplands where they would then request clearance to land. If they were given permission to land, the helicopters would take the proper procedures to land at the base, one at a time, and would depart. The operational commander for the American operators would await the opportunity to meet with his Canadian colleagues to discuss what their mission would be. The operators would hopefully have the chance to relax first, eat, and get a briefing of what their mission would be so that they could effectively fight alongside Joint Force 2. At all times, a number of operators would guard the American helicopters located on-base.

Most of Joint Task Force 2 personnel were in the east, in the outskirts of the Quebecois city of Joliette, preparing for urban warfare and counter-terrorist operations. Those that remained at CFB Uplands were no more than token numbers, waiting for Delta Force to arrive and preparing the CH-146 Griffon helicopters that were to be used in the operations against the Heritage Front.

LCol Ray Romses stood at attention as the Delta Force helicopters came down at their designated landing spots. Approaching their leader, the LCol saluted. "Lieutenant-Colonel Romses at your service, sir." When he was saluted in return, he placed his arm down. "I apologize, but Major-General Matern is not at Uplands. He and the majority of the Force are located at Saint-Pierre, a village municipality located roughly two klicks south-west of Joliette—the last bastion of the terrorists. We're to meet them there as soon as possible. Are your men ready to move or do your choppers need refueling first?"

TOP SECRET

A tall, well-built man in his mid-thirties saluted back to Romses. "I am Lieutenant Colonel Dave Young. We are refueling right now. My men are armed and ready to go... Can you provide sitemaps of Joliette and the surrounding area? If Joliette is relatively safe, we can go for a full briefing at Saint-Pierre. We'll also need a rundown on the rules of engagement... Anyway, we're ready to go in fifteen minutes. We'll follow your lead on the way to Saint-Pierre," he said. If there was nothing else to add, Young and the rest of the Delta Force operators would ensure that the helicopters were properly refueled and prepare for an immediate take off from their location to head to the front line to assist Joint Task Force 2.

Lieutenant Colonel Young and the rest of the Delta Force soldiers returned to their helicopters. All of the necessary preflight checks were done and the helicopters had been refueled. After receiving clearance from CFB Uplands to take off, the helicopters would do so one by one. The American helicopters would allow the Joint Task Force 2 helicopters to take the lead in heading to Saint-Pierre. The Delta Force helicopters would fly at a similar altitude and speed to the Canadian helicopters and be spaced far enough apart that they would not interfere with one another's flight paths. The gunners on the helicopters remained ready to shoot at a given notice with the soldiers onboard sat mostly in silence as they prepared for armed combat in Canada. The helicopters would follow the lead of JTF2 and, when deemed appropriate, land at an appropriate site at Saint-Pierre.

JTF2's OH-58D Kiowa Light Attack Helicopters, Parked in the Field

Secret

The Joint Task Force 2 and Delta Force helicopters were guided to land within a field behind the command post the Canadian special forces had set up. There, sixteen Kiowa helicopters were already parked and prepped with rocket pods. The sky was thick in grey clouds and the snow was already beginning to fall heavily, they needed to act quickly before the coming blizzard turned this mission three times more dangerous.

Once landed, LCol Ray Romses led them all to the command post situated in a metal processing building, now empty of any civilians. Inside, Major-General Matern took lead of the briefing. "Good day, gentlemen!" He declared as he approached them. "On behalf of the Canadian nation: I thank you for coming in our time of need." The soldier then beckoned for them to follow him to the briefing room.

"We have a blizzard on the way," he told them, "so we must act quickly." As he spoke, the room was filled with radio chatter, computers beeping, and various other annoyances. "Here's the current situation," he loomed over a map of Joliette and its surrounding area. "The Canadian army is currently positioned in the following areas: Saint-Thomas in the east, Domaine-LaFortune to the south-east, and Saint-Charles-Borromee to the north-west. We're the sole forces here in the west of Joliette. The enemy's last headquarters is currently located at the Joliette courthouse, roughly three klicks from here, towards the center of the city. It is our belief that the leader of the Heritage Front of Canada, Maverick Smith is currently held up in that building. Our prime objective is to secure him—alive." There were various miniatures placed across the map to show both friendly and enemy units and their estimated locations. "The plan is to have the army push into the city and cause a large enough distraction so that most of the terrorists will focus on the army while we load onto the helicopters and allow the Kiowas to carve a path for us to the courthouse. Once there, we repel down onto the roof and begin breaching and searching for Smith."

The Major-General straightened his back. "Any questions?"

TOP SECRET

The Delta Force helicopters landed safely in the appropriate landing spot near the area where Joint Task Force 2 hand landed. The soldiers gathered with the Canadians for the briefing and listened intently as a few notes were jotted down. There were no questions from the American side. After the briefing, the helicopters were refueled and pre-flight checks were done. The helicopter crews would remain on standby until the Canadians indicated that it was time to take off. A secure, encrypted, and coded message was sent from one of the Delta Force units to the U.S. Army's Military Intelligence Corps which was headquartered in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. It simply read, "Ravens hunting."

When the Canadians indicated that it was time to take off, the Americans would immediately man their aircraft as before and follow the lead of the Canadians.
