CONTEXT

Due to increasing global tensions, specifically in Europe, the decision was made to deploy two destroyers to the Mediterranean Sea. Most of the crews did not know their missions yet, but the Captain and Executive Officer for both destroyers did. The crews for both of the destroyers were assembled at their respective ports and preparations were made for them to disembark out to the Atlantic Ocean. The destroyers were armed and supplies were brought onto the destroyers in a timely manner so that the ships would be able to sustain themselves. The deployment of the destroyers was secret and not publicized in the press. Once the vessels were deployed, the sailed out together into the Atlantic at six in the morning.

SECRET

All preparations were made for Operation Green Crab. Both of the destroyers were manned and armed. They departed from Naval Station Mayport at about 3:30 in the morning on a Friday. The destroyers sailed at a distance of five miles apart form each other once they were out at open sea and used all passive means of sonar available, while using all passive and active means of radar to track any possible threats in the sky, on the surface of the seas, or below the water. The two destroyers would avoid entering the territorial waters of any other country throughout their journey in the Atlantic Ocean. They were sailing towards the Straight of Gibraltar where they would hopefully be able to refuel and continue on their journey into the Mediterranean.

In the early hours of the morning, the Portuguese Naval Command received intelligence indicating the presence of a US fleet in the vicinity of strategic maritime zones near Madeira as they headed towards Gibraltar in international waters. Utilizing the advanced capabilities of the Tridente-class submarine Kraken-2, equipped with cutting-edge detection technology, the Portuguese Navy initiated a discreet surveillance operation.

The Kraken-2, renowned for its stealth and sophisticated sensor suite, successfully detected the US fleet. This operation was complemented by the deployment of Thales LW08 long-range surveillance radar systems, strategically positioned at several secret locations along the Portuguese coast and islands.

Upon confirming the presence of the US fleet, friendlies, the Kraken-2 would surface from a safe and respectful distance form the US fleet and establish communication with the main ship of the US fleet. They approached this interaction with the utmost professionalism and respect.

Captain Mendes initiated the communication with a standard naval greeting, followed by an assurance of Portugal's friendly intentions. "This is Captain Afonso Mendes of the Portuguese Navy submarine Kraken-2. We have detected your presence in the vicinity and are here to ensure the safety and security of these waters. Be assured, our intentions are friendly. We have been shadowing your fleet as part of our routine surveillance operations. However, in a gesture of goodwill and cooperation, we would like to offer your fleet the opportunity to refuel at either Madeira or a southern Portuguese port of your choosing. Portugal values its alliance with the United States and is committed to supporting our allies." Odinson
