Indications regarding the Lying in State and Funeral of Pope John Paul II, 17.06.2001

logo-press-en.png

In the coming days the Office of Liturgical Ceremonies will have quite a full schedule. First off today June 17th 2001, at 0900 His Holiness Cardinal Angelo Sodano, Cardinal Secretary of State, will celebrate the Mass of the Repose of the Soul of His Holiness John Paul II. In a side note this will be the Cardinal’s last official act as Secretary of State, as his position like most in the Roman Curia are Vacated upon the Popes death. As always the Office of the Secretary will remain open and the Cardinal will still act in an ex-officio capacity until he is sequestered in the Sistine Chapel for the election.
The Office of Liturgical Ceremonies would like to inform you all that this will be a semi-private Mass, in that only those Ambassadors, Dignitaries, and Italian officials who are Baptized Catholics will be allowed to attend. In other words, sorry guys no press.

At the end of this solemn event, the Body of the Supreme Pontiff will be moved to the Sala Clementina on the Third Level of the Apostolic Palace. Where he shall lie in state for 6 days, all faithful and well wishes will be encouraged to pay their respects. The Swiss Guard & Gendarmerie will handle crowd control. There will be a private viewing from the arrival of the body and for the first full day for any Foreign Dignitaries to come and pay their respects, after that it will be opened to the public for the daytime, and every evening from 1800-2100 hours the Sala will again be available only to Dignitaries and Church Officials. This is to ensure everyone who wishes to pay their respects has the chance to do so.
The Requiem Mass will be presided over by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, who most recently held the office of Dean of the College of Cardinals. This will take place on June 22nd, 2001, at 1000. There will be assigned seating, so please I encourage you that if you want to be in attendance to contact your appropriate Nuncio, College, or Office to get your tickets as they are likely to sell out fast. At this time the Office of Liturgical Ceremonies would also like to inform the world that due to the arrangements made by his Holiness the Right Apse of the Basilica will be reserved for representatives from Churches not in Full Communion with Rome, with special invitations going out to the Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem who hosted John Paul’s recent visit to the Wailing Wall, as well as to the Patriarchs of the Eastern Churches. It is also of note that invitations have been sent out to ‘Pope’ Michael I in the USA, as well as the Palmerian ‘Pope’.

The Requiem will be followed by the Interment of His Holiness in a simple tomb in the Grottos, as per his request.

All well wishes and gifts can be directed to the Office of the Secretary of State.

Blessings on you all,
<Signed>
Eduardo Cardinal Somalo

The Pope had been sitting in his office rereading the cable that he’d gotten in response to his inquiry in regards to the Hagia Sophia, still incredulous as to the stance that Türkiye chose to take. It wasn’t as if he was demanding that they hand it over to him as extraterritorial property. He tossed the letter onto his blotter as his Camerlengo came in to the room.

“We can’t believe these people, the Power of the Papacy truly atrophied under the reign of the Pole.” He stopped his rant when he saw the sad cast to Lucien’s face.
“What is it my friend?” He asked concern evident in his voice.

“The President of the United States has been shot, and there is rioting in DC.” Lucien announced solemnly.

“Shot? Things have truly gotten out of hand it seems. Quickly call a press conference, I want to make an announcement.” The Pope said as he knew that it was time for him to exercise what little power he had.

*****
Less then an hour later the Press were assembled in the Papal office. The Pope was seated behind his desk, in a plain white cassock, his Papal Tiara on the desk beside him. His eyes were still red rimmed and puffy from the tears he had shed moments before. He made no effort to hide his grief.

“My Children, I come before you now as a Patriot who is proud of my home, and not simply as the Pope. It has come to Our Attention that President Gore has been shot in the back, by the cowardly act of a dishonourable man. We encourage him to turn himself in, and that the Justice System of the United States seek not Vengeance, but Justice in dealing with him. We also order all truly adherent Catholics who are within the Protestors to Stand Down and return to their homes. It is Our sincerest hopes that this can be resolved peacefully, without the need for any further violence or bloodshed. We also will encourage all Catholics the world over to pray for the swift recovery of the President Gore and the intentions of his Family. But to also pray for the strength of the resolve of Vice-President Sinclair during his tenure as steward of the Office of the President. We have also ordered every parish in the United States to dedicate the Mass Tomorrow for Peace and the recovery of the President. Now if you’ll all join me in the recitation of the Rosary for the President.” And with that the Pope began the prescribed prayers with those who were present.

March Summary from the Director of the Holy See Press Office, Joaquin Navarro-Valls, 16.03.2003

logo-press-en.png

At this time His Holiness has seen fit to release to the world notarized copies of an original letter that he received from Abdullah Gül, Prime Minister of the Republic of Türkiye. The Holy See expresses it's gratitude and admiration of the Prime Minister and his Cabinet at making such a bold and reconciliatory move to restore the Hagia Sophia to the Hands of it's original Builders, and is the first of many steps that shall be taken in the future by not only the Turkish Governments but indeed all Muslim Governments to reconcile their actions in regards to Christendom. (Diplomatic Cable from Turkey to the Holy See)

We would also like to make the world aware that the Holy See's plans for the Hagia Sophia are to establish her as the first Co-Cathedral jointly administered by the Latin Patriarch of Constantinople and the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, whom we invite to join us in the endeavor of restoring the Cathedral to it's rightful place in all of Christendom.

Thank you all.

Summary of the Papal Wednesday Address, in regards to Turkey: From the Director of the Holy See Press Office, Joaquin Navarro-Valls, 16.19.2003

logo-press-en.png

His Holiness has taken a strong stance against the iligal and pegan Turkish Government, and for those of you that are interested he did quote Pope Urban's Address to Crusaders. This I am assured was done with complete foreknowledge of the implications and more importantly with the full weight and intentions of those original words. Enclosed is a transcript of the address for quotation: (Transcript of the Papal Address)

Thank you all.
