And after several months of well deserved rests followed by intense preparations, trainings and fine tuning, we are back at the pit wall! The 1998 Saison had its first run of the Season in beautiful Quebec, at the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit, a track full of stories and accolades.

The pre-Season expectation and goals were high among some of the more experienced Teams, such as the reigning champions at Antarctica Motor Racing and main contenders Mercedes-AMG F1. But new teams, such as local favorites Royal Maple F1 and the "new" Scuderia Ferrari, who reappeared after some years of absence also want to have something to say here. They are accompanied by a big group of other teams, some transitioning from 1997, and many other, participating for the first time at a IRC Event.

Saturdays Qualy did not give us many surprises, with Antarctica locking a 1-2 at the starting grid, followed by experienced youngster Morgen Luxemburg on P3 and locals Allen Berg and Jacques Villeneuve.

The race started out without major complications on a cloudy but warm day, with the Antarctica cars holding to their cars against a pushing Luxemburg who mantained a steady distance the brailizans couldnt expand. Things started to get a little bit more complicated for the reigning champions, as steering failure led to the first DNF of the Season, with Mumbai Racing's Vanni Goshi loosing control of his cra and hitting the wall after L'Epingle curve and leaving a small field of debrys on the Casino Straight. This allowed for Mercedes to close the gap to the leaders, and also bringing the pack closer. After 3 yellow flagged laps, the race was resumed, but only to be put on hold again when Kristian Lofthus from Alpine Racing went to wide on the kerbs and spinned into the gravel, sending the Safety Car in once again. This event broke the flow of the race, with a hard battle being fought to enter the podium places. Jenna Spitzer (Mercedes) and Allen Berg (Royal Maple) and Jan Magnussen (Anker) pushed their limits to reach the top positions, putting high pressure on champion Barichello and teammate Da Costa Nascimento. Luxemburg had to see herself loose several positions to the new challengers, finding herself on P6 after the first round of pit stops. Suprisingly, Jenna Spitzer managed to come out of this situation stacket between the brazilians on P2, with Barichello holding its position and Da Costa Nascimento holding on to that podium.

Luck would run out though for the brazilians, and on Lap 34, champion Barichello would see himself involved in a odd accident when trying to lap rookie Aniela Kobos, from Leopard-Tarpan Racing, who failed to yield the racing line on time before entering Senna Corner, resulting in the polish car crashing their front right tire to the overtaking A98, spinning both into the gravel fields. While Kobos had to abandon the race, Barichello was not much better off. Being able to go back on track, his har had sustained serious damage and had to enter the pits to try salvage something. Team radio called him to quit the race, but the brazilians resolve convinced his team principal to let him finish the race. Of course, any "decent" position was out of question, but it was a matter of pride. After a 32 second pit, plus the time lost on the gravel, Barichello appeared on the back of the pack, on last position, severla seconds behind backrunners Jarno Trulli (gear issues), Kunha and both Pampa Energias (with a dissapointing performance, struggling to keep pace). The Antarctica drivers experience and talent allowed him to recover some positions.

Meanwhile, at the front of the race, Spitzer grabbed its opportunity and took the lead, which she surprinsingly managed to mantain against a continously besieging Da Costa Nascimento, crossing the checkered flag waving her hands and passing close to the pit wall where the Mercedes-AMG F1 mechanics were celebrating to her. Allen Berg managed to secure podium, giving the local crowd something to celebrate. Luxemburg and Agren meanwhile provided an very interesting all-female battle. Both experienced drivers exchanged positions during the last quarter of the race, giving the following Magnussen some hope of exploiting the time the women lost on that battle, with the german finally puling ahead of Agren, who showed a strong improvement in relation to the 1997 Season.

In the end, it was not enough for the Anker Motorsport driver, who managed to beat local Villeneuve for P6, but helped cement a very promising start for the rookie danish team, securing P6 and P8. Ferrari, with Fisichella, and Quantas with McLaren grabbed the final points of this race.

As a summary, Antarctica managed to demosntrate its power, but had to endure a bad day, and safety cars and external factors forced them to fall back. Mercedes in the meantime, proved a serious threat to them, securing the first GP of the Season. Royal Maple and, very surprinsingly, Anker Motorsports, also provided a very solid race, putting them in very comfortable positions to start the 1998 Season. The australian Quantas managed to grab points in its first ever race, something to celebrate, while the also newcomer US team Roughnecks, with the Waters Brothers on the cars failed to get into the point positions by few seconds, but gave a decent performance, ending well into the upper-mid positions on P11 and P12. Ferrari has still to improve. While Fisichella raced a good GP, Trulli had to struggle with mechanical problems that haunted him the whole race and left him well behind the average race pace. Finally, the Pampa Energia, A1 Korea Racing, Mumbai F1 and Leopard Tarpan fans still have to wait to see if their teams are up to the challenge. They still have 10 races to demonstrate they are worthy contenders to the title, and that one bad race does not mean the end of the world, but a chance to learn and improve.

With this, we end our transmission and hope to see you in 2 weeks in the "Land of the Free" for the Grand Prix of the United States. These 14 days will give teams and drivers the chance to recover and being working on improvements and upgrade packages.

IRC BOARD NOTICE


After the first GP of the year, the teams gathered useful data on their cars performance around the curves and straights of Montreal. With this valuable information, the teams are able to prepare the first upgrade packages of the season.

All teams receive 2 development points to be distributed as they like in their cars (same car for both drivers). Limit to submit the new upgrades is the day prior to the next race (27 march OOC, please tag Naio). This can be done by a simple post indicating the assignament, or be included it in an entire RP post, which will also contribute to the next race's Bonus and may also provide additional benefits.

On the other hand, all drivers gained 3 experience points, with Kristian Lofthus (Alpine Racing) gaining an additional experience point from learning from his mistake in Montreal.

IRC BOARD NOTICE

1) Due to the publicly known circumstances and the following internal problems, the team "Mercedes-AMG F1" will enter into administration, but will continue competing on the 1998 IRC Championship, until its situation is resolved.

2) With only 48hs until the vehicle upgrade notification limit, the IRC Board encourages the teams that have not yet sumitted their upgrades, do so in order to be allowed to race including said upgrades packages on the upcoming Grand prix of the United States.

After an intense first race of the season, all teams went back to their factories to work on their first upgrade packages, benefiting from their first batch of real race data. But maybe the news of the week was the unexpected crisis that hit Championship leaders Mercedes-AMG F1, that resulted in the german team going into administration and after several days of uncertainty ending up bought by Sparrow Industries, in a move that looks more towards consolidating the team rather than fading for the rest of the season. It was however to expect that all this distractions might have an impact on the teams performance at the Circuit of the Americas.

Texas welcomed the teams with a hot and dry weather, of the sort that really stretches the limits of the tires, guaranteeing several sets to be changed along the race weekend due to their shorter lifespan. Last years champions, Antarctica Motor Racing, came to the US after a rather poor first race, specially for World Champion Barichello, and saw the Mercedes/Sparrow crisis as an opportunity to catch the germans before they got further ahead on the championship. Other front runners such as Royal Maple F1 and the surprising Anker Motorsport looked to further consolidate their "challenger" titles, while other teams had to really change the image they gave in Montreal... Looking at you Pampa, Mumbai and A1 Korea!

Ferrari on the other hand, was expected to do better, since news from Maranello spoke about their mechanical problems (specialyl on Trulli's car) being solved.

From all this initial thoughts, the qualy rapidly showed us that this was not going to be an easy race for the brazilians, starting way back into the grid, they still have to stand up to their Champions title. Surprisingly, Alpine Racing managed to pull-off a 1-2 grid lockdown, followed by last GPs race winner Spitzer, who demonstrated that the fuss during the week did not affect her.

The race began with a small incident when Bruce McLaren in his Quantas lost control of his car, spinning in turn 3 and hitting the safety barrier, provoking the Safety Car to enter the pit until the black car was towed off the track. The 3 laps of Safety Car brougt all cars close together, with Spitzer stalking Agren's position, closely followed by Jacques Villeneuve on P4, Chabra on P5 and Trulli on P6. The Antarctica cars managed to improve their pace, position themselves on P9 and P11 respectively, "sandwiching" the Ferrari of Giancarlo Fisichella. On the rear of the pack, both Pampa Energia’s tried to keep up with the middle pack, together with the locals, Ed and Jack Waters from Roughnecks and the silver/black cars from A1 Korea Racing.

The race restart allowed for the front cars to gain some distance, until the first round of boxes mixed the grid a little. Royal Maple's Allen Berg, last races podium sitter, went into boxes on lap lap 13 due to breaking problems and never came out, after his team decided to retire him. Only 3 laps later, Jason Watt from Anker Motorsport had a massive engine overheating, covering part of the track in white smoke and having to retire, thus preventing him from repeating his good performance in Montreal.

But maybe the most significant incident of the weekend happened on Lap 33, during the Barichello-Fisichella battle. With Barichello running on P9, Fisichella's improve pace to improve up to the point of making consistently faster laps than the brazilian, being only the south american skills what was preventing the italian from overtaking. After multiple failed attempts from the Ferrari, both vehicles entered almost wheel to wheel on turn 13, with the brazilian once again using the inner line of the curve to cut the italians attempt, only for Fisichella to exit it with a quicker pace, both racers then dived for the inner line on turn 14 and most possibly due to both drivers conviction and stubbornes, neither of them fliched resulting in Fisichella's left front tire hitting the carbon fiber on Barichellos right side and right front tire, immediately puncturing the Ferraris tire and jamming the brazilians tire with both cars then almost stacking together and driving off into the sand. The cameras would catch the moment on which both drivers left their cars and were surrounded by race stewards, clearly exchanging some words that would overcome all possible language barriers.

This incident benefited Villeneuve and the second Mumbai F1 driver, while Dwyer (Quantas) and Yi (A1 Korea) spent the last stint of the race battling for the last points.

Aniela Kobos from Leopard-Tarpan had a rather quiet race, and manage to pull of a very solid drive, to grab a good amount of points on P6 and even relegating proven driver Luxemburg to P7.

Further back, Pampa Energia still shows a clear lack of pace comapred to the other drivers, and seemingly its endurance is only enough to bring them to the finish line, with no points even in sigh. A1 Korea in opposition at least showed an improvement in its performance, and only closely missed its firs points of the season.

Local Roughneck had a tough race, having done a very good weekend up to this point, leading Practise Sessions 1 and 3 and reaching with both cars Q3. At least they seem to be on the right track and have still many races to prove themselves.

After 56 laps, Lofthus and Alpine proved to be the best prepared team for the curves and straights of the Circuit of the Americas, taking over the podium and leaving the revelation of the season, Jenna Spitzer, on P2. Jarno Trulli barely missing the podium confirme Ferrari's improvement.

In the end, the norwegian team was the big winner of the day, jumping to almost the top of the Constructors championship table and posing a threat to newly minted Sparrow Racing. Antarctica, who just like last year has a very bad season start is yet still not to be written off, as they came from behind in 1997 and earned the world title both in the Driver and Cconstructors championship through an uncontested dominion (5 consecutive race wins). Royal Maple, although falling a bit behind, has still shown a solid pace, and with 9 more races to go, everything is possible... Even for Pampa Energia's tractors.

Now, all eyes are set to Rio de Janeiro and the Grand Prix of South America. Antarctica's redemption? Sparrow's comeback? Alpine's takeover? We will know in 2 weeks.​

CAR DEVELOPMENT EVENT

After last weekends GP, conclusions were drawn and data was processed. All constructors and their engineers know more or less knew where their cars were standing on the field. This only encouraged further development of the vehicles during the season.

Before the Grand Prix of South America, to be held in Brazil, teams once again went back to the factories to work. But racing and car developing at such levels is not always easy, with only 2 weeks to work, not all teams would manage to pull out some upgrades.​

This week only two teams will receive upgrade points, the ones that manage to set the best time in the "Low Poly Racing" browsergame.

1) Teams (players) can do as many runs as they want, and they can submit their best time until thursday 8th of april at 23.59 Uk/server time.

2) The player with the best lap will receive 2 development points, while the second best lap will receive 1 development point to be used before the GP of South America.

3) Results to be submitted to NAIO over discord on private channels, or publicly, as you prefer, with a SCREENSHOT and the IRC team name written on it.

4) Results will be published here and updated regularly until the deadline.

4) Only the best lap per IRC team will be take into account.

5) Winners will be contacted directly and asked how they wish to use their development points,

CAR DEVELOPMENT EVENT - CONCLUSION

After week of testing, several teams managed to further fine tune the performance of their cars for the upcoming Grand Prix of South America, to be held on sunday in Rio de Janeiro Brazil.​
Due to the amount of cars participating, it was determined that Sparrow Racing (having achieved the best time) will receive 2 development points, while Antarctica Motor Racing, Quantas Motorsport, A1 Korea Racing and Pampa Energia F1 will receive 1 development point. Please indicate how those points will be spent before next saturday 23.59 server time.​
Also, same deadline goes for all Bonus RP to be taken into consideration for the next race.​

The IRC Circus has finally arrived in Rio, to the Autodromo Internacional Nelson Piquet. Those that followed the Internacional Racing Championship in 1997 will remember how this track is famous for being the location where Barrichello and his unstoppable A97 won the Championship and secured Antarctica's 1st World Championship.

Although not as decisive of a round as it was last year, it still holds its historical significance, located in the "Marvelous City" of Rio de Janeiro, the track is one of the two most important racing venues that Brazil has to offer.

The first attraction of the Weekend occurred on the night of Friday, a large Carnaval Parade was organized in the start-finish straight of the Track, schools from across Rio would showcase their costumes, marching bands and floats, each with a different theme.



A twist would be placed on this race, it would occur in the night, under the circuit's newly installed extensive lighting systems, after being successfully tested during the pre-season.

The Race would also mark the presence of the Provincial-President of Rio de Janeiro, Arnaldo Nascimento and especially, His royal highness, Prince Antonio João de Orléans e Bragança, who was going to wave the checkered flag and give the trophies to the drivers once the race was over, he waved to the public with a smile from his place in the paddock, alongside the Provincial-President.

The Grandstands were painted Green from the amount of Antarctica fans that had come to the Track, putting even more pressure on the Brazilian team to get a good result on the race to come.

Sun, beaches and F1! We are back in Brazil for the Grand Prix of South America here in Rio, were last year local Antarctica Motor Racing clinched the Championship with a dominating race from World Champion Barichello. Now, almost a year later, the brazilians are at an little bit different position and return home to reivindicate themselves and re join the fight for the title, bringing the fight back to Sparrow Racing.

After a long race under hot and humid weather, a surprising Fisichella won the race, 20 seconds ahead of an even more surprising Douglas Dwyer from Quantas Motorsport on P2. These unlikely candidates managed to upset what look a perfect comeback for the brazilians, which despite the frustration they might feel for not being able to repeat last years performance, sohuld be happy to have collected a good amount of points to close the gap to the leading team in the cosntructors championship, Sparrow Racing. The german team, recently acquired by the international corporation Sparrow Industries only managed to get a P5 with Luxemburg and a dissapointing P9 with driver's championship leader Spitzer, for a total of 12 points. Still in the lead, but with distances getting shorter very quick.

Alpine Racing also grabbed some points with Ayla Agren, but was far away from last GP's stellar performance, this however still allows them to be among the frontrunners in the Championship.

A special comment has also to be made for Roughnecks and A1 Korea Racing, who grabbed their first points of the Season, with Ed Waters finishing on a remarkable 7th position and Kim Iseok closing the point positions on P10.

On the other end of the table, a lot of work has still to be done in Pampa Energia, Mumbai Racing F1 and Leopard-Tarpan F1, who are set to be fighting for the last positions of the table during this season if they do not improve quickly.​

As the Ferrari of Giancarlo Fisichella crossed the line to mark Ferrari's first victory of the 1998 season, Fireworks would be launched into the air across the entire circuit as a marvellous show of lights and colours.


The Tifosi would go wild with the Victory of the Red Scuderia, Just like the fans of Antarctica as they saw both cars cross the line in the Top 5, With the race finished and the cars heading into the pits, the crowd would invade the track, rushing to the Podium to get a closer look at the victorious trio, cheering them on, on the podium, Prince Antonio would deliver the trophies to each of the 3 drivers that stood on the podium.

Germany welcomed us under a heavy ring, promising a bumpy race at the historic Nürburgring, and boy did it deliver! Nearly half of the field was unable to finish the race, including local and overall favorites Sparrow Racing.

The early retiring of Luxemburg was a heads up of what was about to come. With the promise of the Championship leaver giving up terrain, contenderes Antarctica, Ferrari and the surprising Alpine Racing team stepped up to grab as much point as possible, to cut the distance to the leaders. The mid-race spin and following retiring due to suspension damage of Spitzer only fueled the battle for the top positions even more.

Lofhus (Alpine), Trulli (Ferrari) and Barichello (Antarctica) fought for the last 20 laps, constantly exchanging positions on how to settle the podium, driver of the day Bruce McLaren was also following closely, ready to profit on any of the first three driver's mistakes. In the end, Alpine's Lofthus managed to secure P1 with a closer 2.5 seconds margin over Trulli, who itself was closely followed by current World Champion Barichello, who secure for the first time since last Season back to back podiums.

Despite missing the podium, McLaren has to be happy with his performance, specially considering that team mate Dwyer secured P6, guaranteeing a very decend point haul for the australian team.

P5 was for Ed Waters, who once again outperformed his brother and achieved his best ever finish, and the best finish for the new US team. Further back, A1 Korea keeps showing signs of improvement, securing for the first time ever two point-positions in the same race, with Kim on P7 and Yi on P10. They wer split by Allen Berg, making a comeback into the point and Marcos Siebert, finally giving Pampa Energia F1 their first points after 4 races.

On the other end, aside from Sparrow's catastrophic race and se loosing of the Championship leadership (but still very very close), Anker Motorsport had another bad race, together with India's Mumbai Racing F1 and Leopard-Tarpan Racing.​

You were looking forward to this race, and so where the tifosi! Welcome once again to Monza, Ferrari's home turf!

Reaching slowly mid-season, we have now a clear image on who might be fighting for the championship as a driver, and which teams are taking on the challenge of taking down Antarctica as the reigning world champion.

And almost all of these candidates said hello on this sunny sunday, with Barichello finally breaking the malefice and winning a race after over 6 months, since last Interlagos last year, and by a safe margin of over 20 seconds from runner-up Giancarlo Fisichella, who gave the tifosi something to cheer in a Ferrari who looks more and more menacing with the passing of the races. The podium was completed with Morgen Luxemburg, who brough Sparrow Racing back from its 2-race slumber to obtain a boost of points to keep fighting on the top. Both Ferrari and Sparrow managed to haul additional points with Trulli (P7) and Spitzer (P10). Sadly Antarctica's Da Costa Nascimento was unable to to the same, and had to abandon the race rather early, but this does not tarnish Barichello's solid weekend and Antarctica's resurrection.

The podium sitters showed a superior pace, lapping everybody else at least by 1 lap and some even by 2. Villeneuve and Royal Maple also demonstrated a good pace, returning to the points with a good P5, closely followed by Iseok Kim's A1 Korea Racing, who together with Kunha Yi managed once again a double-pointer finish (P5 and P8). The Korean's are slowly climbing the ranks and might be building promising ground for the 1999 season. They have reason to believe.

Completing the point positions are Jack Waters from Roughnecks, also demonstrating that the US-based team has something to show with a P6, while Jan Magnussen returned the smile to Anker Motorsport, with new points after some races.

Closely missing the points, Leopard-Tarpan racing showed signs of improvement, with a P11 and P12 finish, while Quantas Motorsport, of a good season so far, had to call it a day early, with both their drivers quitting the race.

Alpine Racing had a surprinsingly bad race, with one car abandoning mid race and the other limping over the finish line, lapped twice by the top-three. But even so, the surprinsing norwegians remain at the top positions of the championships, but they lost some ground and need to quickly recover.

Finally, once more Pampa Energia and Mumbai Racing demonstrated their lack of pace and the long way they have to go to be competitive, even for the mid-field.

Heading now to Norway, its special track layour promises a very even and unpredictable race. Maybe we will see a new team rising?​

The Norway Grand Prix, perhaps the most unique circuit this year due to its short lenght and very few curves had some surprises for us in storage, although the podium was once again split between the main title contenders Sparrow, Antarctica and Alpine (and an absent Ferrari, who performed badly and got a little relegated in the Championship fight), Pampa Energia finally managed to get some decent result with Tuero missing on the Podium and Leopard Tarpan scoring a double pointer for the first time in its history (P8 and P9).

Luxemburg was able to bring Sparrow back some of that energy we saw at the start of the season, with a new title and holding off any contender from taking them off the Championship ranking. Antarctica, even though missing the race win by 8 secods with Da Costa Nascimento, performed well, scoring points with both of its drivers (Barichello on P7). The korean team also showed once again why it is on it ascendent curve, with Kim scoring high once more, barely beating Quantas's Dwyer for P5. The scoring positions where closed by Lofthus Alpine, giving the locals something to cheer in addition to the solid 3rd place achieved by Agren.

Ferrari had a bad race and fell behind in the fight for the title, but with still 5 races to go, they are in the fight.​

After a quick but intense race in the korean peninsula, who used the occasion the recently gained unification of its people, it was the local team who celebrated the confirmation that they are doing the work right, gaining its first podium ever with a P2 from Kunha Yi and a closely following P4 from teamamte Iseok Kim. The other celebrating team was title favorite Antarctica, who once more brought a trophy back to Brazil with Da Costa Nascimento's commanding win (over 25 seconds ahead of the korean). P3 was reserved for Lofthus in his Alpine, who failed to beat the korean in this final battle and ended up being only less than 0.300 behind the black car.

Another team that has something to celebrate was the Scuderia of Maranello, with two decent point finishes it close the gap to the leaders of the Constructors Championship, led now by the brazilians after Sparrow had once again a bad race, giving hints of certain stagnation in its progress.

Paragraph aside for Mumbai Racing F1, who surprised everybody with a solid performance, with Goshi ending up on P6 and Chabra only missing the points by few seconds. Is this maybe the start of the indian teams new life?

Finally, Villeneuve and McLaren secured P8 and P10 respectively, bringing some additional points home for their team to eventually prevail in that intense midpack battle.

We will see you in 2 weeks for the next GP, in India, where the local team would want to confirm his upwards trend, while Antarctica will be lloking to secure the necesarry points to go to the South American tour one step from the championship title. But certainly Sparrow, Ferrari and Alpine will not make it that easy for them.​
