Confederal Feminist Association
The Confederal Feminist Association (CFA) is a Marxist Feminist communist front of the Feminist-Socialist Coalition (FSC) in the National Assembly of Thailand. With more than 1.7 million members, most of whom are FSC members, the mass organization is Thailand’s most influential anti-capitalist, gender equality advocacy group. The CFA regularly hosts seminars discussing how the capitalist mode of production inherently creates an oppressive superstructure toward women. Even in Thailand’s socialist paradigm, the CFA aims to achieve women’s liberation by establishing a communist society that accounts for and recognizes historically unpaid domestic, emotional, and social reproductive labor, as well as sex relations.
The CFA also serves as an educational institution for the FSC’s party cadres, especially women, who desire to enter participatory political institutions from sub-district councils to the National Assembly. The communist front’s members are highly critical of other forms of feminism, deemed reinforcing of class structure. As such, the CFA often clashes with liberal feminists on international platforms. Marxist Feminists believe such a mainstream position would undermine the efforts of Marxism to improve conditions for the working class. Furthermore, many female parents take their daughters to CFA-organized events, although their political alignment might be with other communist parties.
The CFA has an active and prominent social media presence. Thai netizens often witness their members arguing or advocating for women’s liberation policies on personal blog posts or comment sections. Television channels occasionally feature prominent Marxist-feminist activists to give opinions on societal, economic, and political development. Social scientists agree that the communist front has a clear footprint on most Thai females’ worldview. Notably, the CFA maintains a dedicated profile on ThaiHub, a pornographic platform. With 70,000 followers, the mass organization often produces sex-positive feminist content, educating women on sexual freedom and best sex practices.
Furthermore, the CFA collectively owns several manufacturing plants producing menstrual hygiene products alongside the FSC. Partnering with the Ministry of Public Health, the communist front exerts significant cultural influence through the provision of sanitary pads, tampons, menstrual cups, and period underwear to the public service’s free offering of these products. The CFA also operates educational courses on effective pain management of dysmenorrhea, known as menstrual cramps. Such courses include the best strategies using Ibuprofen, naproxen, or acetaminophen, heat therapy, gentle exercise, and relaxation techniques. The mass organization also provides a pre-defined nutrition plan and emotional support platform through social media and telephone.
