KLM Flight 1959, operated by a Boeing 737-9K2 (B739), departed Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (EHAM) on a routine scheduled service to Istanbul Airport (LTFM). With 174 passengers and 6 crew members on board, the aircraft climbs smoothly into the early evening sky before levelling off at FL360 (36,000 feet) as it cruises southeast across Europe. The flight has been uneventful. Passengers are relaxing, some watching films while others enjoy the inflight meal service. In the cockpit, the Captain and First Officer monitor the aircraft as it cruises under autopilot. Without warning, the calm is interrupted, a loud warning tone echoes through the flight deck as a red ENG 2 FIRE message appears on the Engine Indication and Crew Alerting System (EICAS). The master warning lights illuminate and the fire bell begins sounding.

The First Officer carries out the Engine Fire memory items, bringing the right engine to idle before shutting it down completely while the Captain takes control of the aircraft. The engine fire handle is pulled, and the first fire extinguisher bottle is discharged into the engine, quickly the Captain would key his radio button while the First Officer hits the transponder with a 7770 General Emergency Squawk

"Mayday, Mayday, Mayday, Istanbul Control, KLM One Niner Five Niner. Engine Two fire indication. Engine shut down, fire bottle discharged. Request immediate priority vectors to Istanbul." the Captain and First Officer eagerly awaited a reply...

Emrah Torun stood up from the radar console, stretching his back with a groan. "Long one tonight."

Oktem Yasin dropped into the seat, adjusting the headset over his ears. "Anything I need to know?"

"Ops sent a note about a blackout zone, restricted airspace over northern Iraq. Effective a few hours ago. No details, no NOTAM number yet, just 'avoid and reroute.'" Emrah shrugged into his jacket. "Above my pay grade."

Oktem frowned at the handoff sheet. "Nobody tells us anything anymore."

"Welcome to the job." Emrah patted him on the shoulder and was gone.

Oktem settled in, running his eyes across the scope. Traffic was light and orderly, the usual eastbound flow easing into Turkish airspace off the Balkans, a scattering of southbound repositioning flights, nothing unusual. Oktem logged in, checked frequencies, sipped from a cup of tea gone lukewarm.

Then a target on the northwestern corridor blinked, its data tag suddenly flashing. KLM1959 — 7700

Oktem sat up straight, eyes locking onto the return. Emergency squawk. He grabbed for the frequency selector just as the radio crackled.

"Mayday, Mayday, Mayday, Istanbul Control, KLM One Niner Five Niner. Engine Two fire indication. Engine shut down, fire bottle discharged. Request immediate priority vectors to Istanbul."

Oktem kicked the mic switch. "KLM One Niner Five Niner, Istanbul Control, roger your Mayday. Radar contact, squawking Seven Seven Zero Zero. Confirm souls on board and fuel remaining."

A short pause, then the Captain's voice, tight but controlled. "Istanbul Control, KLM One Niner Five Niner, one eight zero souls on board, six crew, one seven four passengers. Fuel remaining approximately four hours."

"Copy, KLM One Niner Five Niner, one eight zero souls, four hours fuel." Oktem was already keying his supervisor's extension with his other hand, phone wedged against his shoulder. "Say your present altitude and heading, and confirm single engine operation."

"Level flight three six zero, heading one three five. Confirmed single engine, operating on Number One. Aircraft is stable, no further indications on the remaining engine."

"Roger, KLM One Niner Five Niner, understood. Stand by."

The supervisor picked up. "Ferhat, I've got an emergency, KLM heavy, engine fire, single engine now, needs priority into Istanbul." Oktem didn't wait for a reply before continuing. "I need crash, fire, rescue standing by, and I need the sector cleared ahead of him."

"Copy, spinning up CFR now," Ferhat said. "Keep him talking."

Oktem kicked back to the frequency. "KLM One Niner Five Niner, Istanbul Control, you are cleared direct Istanbul Airport, descend and maintain flight level two four zero, expect further descent shortly. Emergency services are being alerted, runway will be arranged for your arrival."

Oktem began sweeping his other traffic off the direct line between the KLM flight and the airport, issuing quick reroutes, the adrenaline now running through him.

He flagged the strip in front of him, marking it in red, and reached for the direct line to Istanbul Airport's tower.

"Istanbul Tower, Approach, I have a KLM Triple Seven, negative, 737, engine fire, single engine, declaring emergency, priority handling required. Request CFR full response, foam."

The tower controller's voice came back fast. "Copy, Approach, we're setting it up now. Which runway are you planning?"

"Give me a minute, I'll confirm once he's stabilized on descent."

Oktem turned back to the KLM flight. "You're doing fine, KLM One Niner Five Niner. You have priority landing for Istanbul."

The Captain's final transmission came over the frequency, calm despite the circumstances: "KLM One Niner Five Niner commencing descent. We'll keep you advised."

For a few moments, everything appeared normal. The Boeing 737 began a steady descent over the sea, its progress continuing without any obvious signs that the situation was worsening.
Then...Silence. No further radio calls were received, the aircraft continued descending, but the transponder data became erratic. The reported altitude stopped updating correctly before disappearing altogether. Moments later, the radar return began to weaken. the aircraft symbol flickered once then again.

Seconds later, it vanished completely (Zone KN). No secondary radar, no primary return and no emergency transmission. Absolutely nothing.

For a moment, Oktem just stared at the empty patch of scope where the tag had been, his hand still hovering over the frequency selector.

"KLM One Niner Five Niner, Istanbul Control, radar contact lost. Say altitude." Nothing came back to him except a static hiss. "KLM One Niner Five Niner, Istanbul Control, how do you read?"

Silence.

He tried again and still silence. He then turned to an open frequency. "Any aircraft this frequency, any aircraft, relay to KLM One Niner Five Niner if you have contact."

A southbound flight cut in, uncertain. "Istanbul Control, uh, Turkish Four-Two-One, negative contact, we do not have him."

Oktem's hand was already moving before his brain fully caught up. He stabbed the intercom to the supervisor's desk.

"Ferhat, I've lost a plane. Radar and comms both, primary and secondary gone, last position four one point seven two three nine three north, two eight point three two zero seven four east, level unknown, last reported descending through flight level two four zero."

Ferhat was already standing at his shoulder before he'd finished the sentence, headset half on. "Time of loss?"

Oktem glanced at the clock, hand shaking slightly as he wrote it on the strip. "Now. Just now."

"That's it, that's DETRESFA." Ferhat didn't wait, reaching past him for the direct line. "MRCC İstanbul, this is Istanbul Control, we are declaring a distress phase. KLM One Niner Five Niner, Boeing 737, one eight zero souls on board, last known position four one seven two three nine three north, two eight three two zero seven four east, radar and radio contact lost following a declared engine fire emergency and single-engine operation. Request full SAR response."

There was a pause on the line then the other line responded. "MRCC copies, DETRESFA declared, one eight zero souls, position copied. Stand by, we are notifying Northern Fleet and Coast Guard now."

Oktem sat frozen for a second.

"Oktem." Ferhat's hand was on his shoulder now, the same spot Emrah's had been an hour before. "I need you to keep working. Sweep your other traffic clear of that position, we're going to have military inbound through your sector inside the next ten minutes."

Oktem nodded, throat tight, and reached for the mic again. His voice came out steadier than he felt. "All aircraft this frequency, be advised, expedited military traffic will be transiting this sector for a search and rescue operation. Listen and watch. Keep that space clear. You are doing everything correctly."

Turkish Minister of Infrastructure and National Development
Ali Taylan Öztaylan

"Good evening. I will begin this press conference followed by remarks by the Director General of our civil aviation authority. At approximately 18:40 local time yesterday evening, Istanbul Air Traffic Control received a distress call from KLM Flight 1959, a Boeing 737 en route from Amsterdam to Istanbul Airport, reporting an engine fire. Our controllers acted immediately and in full accordance with international emergency procedure. The aircraft was granted priority handling, the surrounding airspace was cleared, and the flight was vectored directly toward Istanbul.

Despite these efforts, radar and radio contact with the aircraft was lost before it reached the airport. A short time later, the aircraft went down over the Black Sea.

Upon loss of contact, MRCC İstanbul declared a distress phase within minutes and launched a full search and rescue response. Turkish Air Force fighter aircraft were the first assets on scene, followed immediately by maritime patrol aircraft, which located the debris field and coordinated the search pattern. Turkish Navy began pulling survivors from the water within the first hour of the crash being confirmed.

Two Turkish Navy frigates, TCG Alanya and TCG Yavuz, arrived on scene to establish casualty collection and medical treatment, working in direct support of our naval aviation assets throughout the night. I want to commend every sailor, airman, and medical officer involved. Their speed saved lives.

The Turkish Government confirms that 180 souls were aboard KLM Flight 1959 including 174 passengers and 6 crew. Of these, 131 have been rescued and are currently receiving medical care. It is with great sorrow that we confirm 49 individuals lost their lives in this tragedy.

The nationalities of those aboard span several countries. We are working directly with each government represented on this flight to ensure that families are notified through proper diplomatic channels before any individual identities are released. Out of respect for those families, the Turkish Government will not be releasing further details on the deceased at this time. We ask the media to respect this process. I know turn it over to Dr. Yüksek our Director-General. Director."

Director General of the Turkish Civil Aviation Authority
Dr. Kemal Yüksek
"Thank you Minister. Based on preliminary information relayed by the flight crew prior to loss of contact, the emergency began with a fire indication on the aircraft's Number Two engine. The crew carried out standard fire-suppression procedure, shutting the engine down and discharging fire suppression, and continued flight on the remaining engine while requesting priority routing to Istanbul.

I want to stress this is a preliminary account only. At this stage, the working assessment points toward a mechanical failure originating in the engine, though the precise cause, whether related to a component failure, an uncontained fire spread, or a related structural issue, has not been determined and will not be speculated on further tonight.

Turkish Navy divers are currently working to locate and recover the aircraft's flight data and cockpit voice recorders. Once recovered, these will be central to determining the full sequence of events. A formal investigation is expected to be conducted with Dutch investigative authorities and is expected to begin in the coming days."

Ali, the Minister then continued with the technical analysis being completed. "On behalf of the Turkish Government, I extend our deepest condolences to the families of all those who lost their lives in this tragedy, and to the governments of every nation whose citizens were aboard this flight.

I also want to recognize the extraordinary response of our Coast Guard, Navy, and Air Force, whose actions last night reflect the very best of this country's commitment to protecting human life. We will provide further updates as the investigation progresses. Thank you.

Upon the sad news of the incident, the United States Secretary of State ordered the embassy in Ankara to take possession of the bodies of the deceased Americans and to assist the survivors of the incident. The embassy was also instructed to coordinate with the families of the deceased and to assist them with returning their bodies to the United States. The American Ambassador obtained the names of the American deceased through the Turkish government and securely transmitted them to the Secretary of State in Washington. The Federal Government took special care to triple-check the identities of the Americans who died, obtain their social security numbers, identify their next of kin, and discretely inform them that their loved ones had died in KLM Flight 1959. Special accommodations were made for any Americans who made their way to Turkey to bring their loved ones home.

The Australian Embassy in Ankara and the Australian Consulate-General in Istanbul would receive the information of the 6 Australians and New Zealanders who either survived or perished in the tragedy, 4 Australians and 2 New Zealanders. 3 Australians, from the same family, sitting next to each other near the front of the aircraft, would perish. 1 solo Australian traveller and a New Zealand couple towards the rear of the aircraft would survive. The Australian Embassy would work with the New Zealand Embassy to repatriate the New Zealand couple.

The three Australians who perished were identified as parents Jack and Fiona and daughter Chloe O'Connor from Stirling, South Australia in the Adelaide Hills. Their bodies would be prepared for repatriation by Australian Consular officials from the Consulate-General in Istanbul. South Australia Police would visit the family members of the deceased to inform them.

The solo Australian, from Melbourne, and the New Zealand couple (given the lack of New Zealand Consulate in Istanbul) would be taken in by the Australian Consulate-General in Istanbul once their medical treatment had concluded. An Australian Government aircraft, an Airbus A319, which is jointly operated by the Australian Antarctic Division and the Department of Home Affairs and used for whole-of-government civilian transport operations, would be sent to Turkey to collect the surviving and the deceased and to take them back to Adelaide, Melbourne and Auckland, respectively.
