Participatory Socialist Group

Participatory Socialist Group (PSG) is a radical democratic communist front of the Thai Rak Thai Party (TRT) in the National Assembly. With more than 9.5 million members, some of whom are TRT members, it is Thailand’s largest mass organization known for advocating for expanding democracy to all spheres of public life. Compared to its parent communist party, PSG selectively focuses on radical democracy over TRT’s other ideology of council communism. Given Thailand’s confederal structure per the Socialist Participatory Democracy system, the communist front consistently champions democracy’s supremacy in social, economic, political, cultural, and international practices.

The PSG serves as TRT’s primary platform for attracting recruits and experimenting with new policies regarding further democratization of the Thai society. It is among the country’s most active event organizers and public demonstration groups. The mass organization’s collective actions of its members often make headlines. Officially, PSG holds enmity and deep reservations towards proponents of democracy’s other forms. Specifically, its members are critical of “bourgeois procedural democracy” found in all liberal democratic nations. According to such a group, liberal democrats worldwide are unconscious puppets of the ruling capitalist class to preserve the status quo and suppress the revolutionary potential of the working class in each country.

The communist front maintains an active social media presence, frequently organizing online workshops on democratic decision-making. Due to its massive membership, sociologists consider the mass organization’s internal radical democratic culture as one of the reasons Thailand continues deepening its participatory democratic mechanisms. PSG members hold elected managerial positions in many worker cooperatives or democratically managed public enterprises. Therefore, they collectively ensure the ongoing refinement of economic democracy practices in Thailand. Even in daily lives, PSG has made a huge cultural impact by contributing to Thailand’s unique socialist etiquette, such as circular speaking and dining manners.
