Ministry of Foreign Affairs Responds to Request for Emergency Special Session on Catalonia
Press Statement
The Hague, September 2006
The Government of the Kingdom of the Netherlands has taken note of the formal request submitted by the Kingdom of Poland to convene an Emergency Special Session of the Assembly of the Global Assembly concerning the situation in Catalonia, within the Kingdom of Spain.
The Netherlands affirms its unwavering commitment to the principles of the GA Charter, including respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all Member States. The constitutional order of Spain is a matter for the Spanish people and their democratic institutions. We continue to support a peaceful, lawful, and democratic resolution of internal matters within the framework of national and international law.
At this time, the Netherlands has decided not to support the request for an Emergency Special Session. We believe that such a session is neither warranted nor conducive to constructive dialogue at this time.
The Netherlands remains fully committed to the peaceful resolution of disputes, the promotion of human rights, and the strengthening of democratic governance. We encourage all stakeholders to engage in dialogue and respect the rule of law and to bring this situation to a resolution.
