Self-Determination League
The Self-Determination League (SDL) is an anti-monarchist and anti-imperialist communist front of the Marxist Unity Party (MUP) in the National Assembly. With over 2.5 million members, some of whom are MUP members, the mass organization is a driving force behind Thailand’s global liberation sentiment. Informed by Lenin’s crucial theoretical work, SDL philosophically asserts that imperialism is the highest, yet degenerated form of capitalism. True to its parent communist party’s more orthodox interpretation of Marxism, the SDL is extremely critical of the global monarchy and imperialist practices. It advocates for a brutal proletarian revolution against the ruling bourgeoisie and feudalism globally, including in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Poland, Russia, Japan, Canada, and Australia.
The SDL serves as a more dogmatic platform for Thailand’s foreign policy experiment. Because the Thai People’s Front coalition often allies with social-democratic or monarchical regimes based on pragmatic grounds, the communist front disapproves of such an approach. It opposes Thailand’s continued alliances with the Empire of France and the Kingdom of Sweden. The mass organization considers these two polities to embody imperialist interests and prevent class consciousness among their population. Although Thailand’s general cultural acceptance of Sweden and France is high, SDL’s members do not conform to such a mainstream perception.
The SDL holds that imperialism is a world system in which great powers divide the world and monopolize investment. It considers the Soviet Union a social imperialist state, meaning that it is a country that has ousted the capitalist class yet failed to resolve imperialism as the inherent contradiction and final developmental stage of capitalism. The communist front is also an anti-war organization and opposes Thailand’s continued deployment of troops in Türkiye and maintenance of a large and sophisticated armed force. The mass organization also shares some members with the Anti-American Society and the Anti-Zionist Club due to their anti-imperialist nature.
