The Tasmanian Labor Party room would vote on the new leader of the party, electing Lara Giddings from the Labor Left faction 11 votes to Paul Lennon's 8. Consequently, David Llewellyn withdrew from the Deputy Leadership contest and Bryan Green was elected unopposed to maintain convention that the Leader and Deputy Leader's of the party come from different factions.

Later that day, Premier Jim Bacon would offer his resignation to Governor Sir William Cox at Government House in Hobart and Lara Giddings would be sworn in shortly after as Premier and Bryan Green as Deputy Premier. Lara Giddings would then swear in a complete cabinet with many reshuffles from Jim Bacon's Cabinet. Paul Lennon would take on Bryan Green's former portfolio and David Llewellyn would maintain his current portfolio.
