The Texas Military Department, administered by the Adjutant General of Texas, is the executive branch state agency which overseas the Texas Military Forces including: the Texas Army National Guard, the Texas Air National Guard, and the Texas State Guard. The Governor of Texas is the commander-in-chief of all three forces. However, the President of the United States can issue a lawful order to activate both National Guard components. The Texas State Guard is unique in that it is a state militia force which cannot be federalized. Today's Texas military forces are descendants of the Texian military forces that existed when the Republic of Texas was a sovereign country from 1836-1845: Texas Rangers (now part of the Department of Public Safety), Texas Army, Texas Navy, and Texas Marines.
