Former Secretary of Defense Richard "Dick" Cheney has been arrested for the murders that took place at the 2/05 attack on the Capitol as well as treason. In an address from the Rose Garden of the White House, President Gore confirmed that Cheney was the ringleader of a number of businessmen and powerbrokers who conspired to overthrow the federal government and replace it with individuals who are more sympathetic to their cause. The President announced that the Department of Justice and the entire Executive Branch would work with Congress if they decided to hold a formal investigation.

On February 5, 1997 a number of explosive devices were used to destroy the House Chamber of the Capitol Building during President Clinton's first State of the Union since his reelection. This attack was perpetrated by the aforementioned conspirators, led by Cheney, who called it "Operation Guillotine". President Clinton, the head of every federal department and most agencies, most of the Supreme Court, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, every member of the House of Representatives and every senator but one were instantly murdered, along with guests, dignitaries, and security.

While almost the entire elected leadership of the federal government had been killed in less than a few seconds, there were a few remaining survivors including: then Vice President Al Gore, then Senator Benjamin Valentine Sinclair, and then Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Clarence Thomas. According to President Gore, all three men were instrumental in holding the country together and rebuilding the federal government. After a new Senate was appointed by the governors, President Gore selected Senator Sinclair to be Vice President, and to be the first Independent to hold that position.

Thousands gather outside of the White House after President Gore's speech announcing the arrest of Dick Cheney and the end to a national conspiracy.

While it is still unclear how they were obtained, The Times can confirm that the conspirators had gotten their hands on one or more dirty bombs or weapons of mass destruction. Yesterday, in a last-ditch attempt to destroy the federal government, one of those weapons was launched on a ballistic missile at Washington D.C. Within seconds of it being launched, the Air Force was able to shoot down the missile; the Department of Defense declined to comment how the missile was shot down. Special forces from the military and federal government arrested Cheney at his home in Nebraska, and he was brought into federal custody. He is currently at an undisclosed location.

Several dozen other conspirators were involved in this attack from multiple Fortune 500 companies and well-known "Old Money" families. The FBI, CIA, and NSA have all declined to comment as to what information they had on the 2/05 attack before it took place. All three agencies stated that they would be "fully participating in any congressional investigations into the 2/05 on our nation."

The White House issued a statement which read, in part, "The Department of Justice will release more non-sensitive details in the day to come so that Americans have a better understanding of events from the past few years. What has happened is long and complicated, but everyone deserves to know what happened, and why it happened."

In three days, President Gore and House Speaker George W. Bush will be holding their second and final presidential debate on the topic of "Domestic Policy". The Times can confirm that yesterday and today's events will be covered at the debate in some way.

ONWARD TO GREATNESS: LAFLEUR WINS ELECTION
Avery LaFleur is elected to the presidency of the United States by a majority of voters and congress.

2008-Election.png

Picture of President-elect Avery LaFleur.

Louisiana Governor and son of a New Orleans cop Avery LaFleur has been elected the 45th President of the United States. President-elect LaFleur has a number of firsts under his belt: the first African American, the first Louisianian, and the first detective to be elected to the American presidency.

LaFleur is a self-made man who has overcome exceptional odds in his life. He followed in the footsteps of his father and became a New Orleans police officer in 1978. In 1981 he uncovered a major corruption scandal involving the one New Orleans city councilman, the mayor, and two state officials. He was promoted to detective that same year and remained in that post through 1985. LaFleur was unable to promote further because he lacked a college education, so he attended Tulane where he earned a B.A. in Political Science and, afterwards, he earned a J.D. with honors. The same year he graduated he became a public defender in Orleans Parish and remained in that position until 1994 when he was elected as a Louisiana State Senator. In 2001 LaFleur was elected Attorney General after campaigning to fight corruption in Louisiana. He survived three separate assassination attempts and uncovered, and successfully prosecuted, multiple corrupt local and state officials, some of which even had connections to organized crime. Finally, in 2004, LaFleur was elected Governor of Louisiana with a focus on building up the states infrastructure and continuing his fight against corruption.

President-elect LaFleur now faces the American political machine and his own Vice President-elect who is both from a different political party and has immense political and social capital. LaFleur is not a stranger to political challenges and was seen as a uniting figure in Louisiana. His campaign for Governor of Louisiana was not taken seriously until the front-runner for the Republican nomination withdrew and he became he frontrunner. LaFleur reached out to rural communities in south and north Louisiana which, historically, have not voted for black candidates of either party since Reconstruction. His focus on fighting corruption, unity, and looking forward brought in conservatives and moderates alike to his coalition. Time will tell if he is able to pull off something similar in Washington D.C.

Nationally, African Americans and Americans of all backgrounds across the United States are celebrating the election of the first black President. In LaFleur's hometown of New Orleans, Mayor Nagin has declared tomorrow a city holiday and temporarily suspended restrictions on fireworks as thousands of residents have taken to the French Quarter to celebrate the results of the election. Louisiana, which has a population of less than 5-million, has seen celebrations throughout the state for the first man from their state to be elected President. Louisiana is the second-poorest nation in the country by GDP and, in especially rural areas, has degraded infrastructure that hasn't been updated since Huey Long was governor in 1932. With LaFleur in the White House and Jack Landry as Speaker of the House, Louisiana may finally get more national assistance for its state and local issues.

LaFleur's transition team announced that he will be meeting with President Sinclair tomorrow afternoon at the White House. LaFleur and Sinclair come from wildly different backgrounds but have some policy perspectives in common when it comes to national defense and national unity. Afterwards, President-elect LaFleur and Vice President-elect Kennedy are scheduled to meet for the first time for a one-on-one meeting at an undisclosed location somewhere in Washington. LaFleur's transition team emphasized that the meeting will be private and that press will not be invited to document it - "instead it is meant to be a frank and productive meeting between America's next President and Vice President," said the transition team in a press release.

LaFleur and Kennedy are both set to be inaugurated at noon on January 20, 2009.
