"The Minister for Foreign Affairs, The Honourable Dr. Carmen Lawrence MP, has today issued a directive to close with immediate effect the Australian Embassies in Baghdad and in Kuwait City. All Australians seeking consular assistance from either Iraq or Kuwait should contact the Australian Embassy in Riyadh. As of today there is now a Do Not Travel advisory for the Iraqi Republic, the State of Kuwait, the Syrian Arab Republic and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Embassies in Riyadh, Tehran, Abu Dhabi, Amman and Damascus remain open. The Australian Government continues to condemn in the strongest terms the actions of the Hussein Government in Iraq. We will continue to work with our Coalition partners in regards to this matter. No further comment will be made at this stage."

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia would allow any displaced Australians to enter Saudi Arabia and take commercial flights back to Australia.
