To the surprise of many, they're back. Throughout the country we are seeing a resurgence of Reactionary and Fascist activity here in Belgium. After 51 years of lying dormant, the far right has returned and this time there shall be vengence.
Though dormant for a fairly long period of time now, in the last year or so nearly 7 organisations have been formed with the explicit intention of promoting a fascist worldview and expanding the role of the church and corporate entities as they relate to the overall position of the state in the fight against communism and liberal democracy. The most promenient of which, is the clerical fascist and mildly anti semitic National Salvation Party, a political organisation that has managed to gain a sizable base of support from gangs of disenfranchise youths and lower middle class families who feel as though only a strong state is capable of preserving the family unit, private property, and the position of the Catholic church against the pressures of the modern world.
Marches and Mass Rallies have taken place in Brussels and Antewerpen, of which on 4 separate occassions provoked a violent response from local anti fascists and communist paramilitaries without intervention from a largely indifferent police force full of apoliticals and moderates. For Belgium's small Jewish community, the rise in popularity of fascist organisations like The National Salvation Party could very well signal the end of an era not unlike the events of the Nazi occupation or Genocide. With polls garnering favour at nearly 50% we might see a fascist regime in the near future.
At a prayer service in Ghent, a gang of fascist clad in blackshirts fell upon several worshippers at the local Jewish congregation killing 17 and forcing the Synagogue to close its doors. Incidents of a violent character are also being directed against recent immigrants from Turkey and The former Yugoslavia as well as the vibrant LGBTQ scene. Several reports from the police indicate a 60% increase in violent crime as a result of fascism's resurgence.
The lack of a consistently anti fascist response from the police has hardened the hearts of many who have since flocked to the communist banner seeking protection. Though regretable, the police have largely taken a backseat in dealing with fascist outbursts. Small units of self defense personnel have been formed by local communities witb the support of communist party offices and anarchist rifle clubs.
