Exercise Resolute Harmony '07 kicked off with style at CFB Trenton as a C-130J Super Hercules barrelled down the runway in the dark winter Ontario night. Onboard, 1 Platoon, A Company, Canadian Special Operations Regiment a specialist team of 36 troops were in the cargo hold as the 2 pilots took the plane soaring into the sky towards CFB Petawawa, climbing steeply up to 25,000ft

The operators carried heavy bergens between their legs filled with clothing, sleeping bags, clean clothes, hygiene packs, ammunition, rations and stove, and other survival essentials for a period in the cold bitter Canadian winter. The plane's crew master made the final checks of the soldiers equipment, confirming them ready for launch.

As the cargo doors opened against the intense wind at 25,000ft, the soldiers turned on their oxygen supplies attached to their parachutes. Waddling to the cargo door, they looked towards the crew chief watching his stop watch intensely.

"30 seconds...!"

One of the young soldiers at the front of the ramp looked down, at the pitch black void beneath them. The vast emptiness of this part of Canada meant lights were few and far between

"15 seconds...!"

"5 seconds...!"

The younger soldier, Charlie, took a gulf for his first mission as a operator. He waddled closer to the edge

"GO GO GO!"

Charlie took a beat, before leaping from the platform. The wind snapped him over onto his back, able to see the giant C-130J shrink away out of vision. His section of 9 other soldiers followed behind him, grabbing hold of each other to guide each other towards their landing zone. Above him, the remaining soldiers took to the air, aiming for the drop zone.

Charlie looked down to his watch as the dial ticked down his altitude. The height fell away quickly as he tumbled closer to the ground. As Charlie, reached 5000 ft he stood by ready to pull his cord. A further 2,000 ft dropped by as Charlie yanked hard on the chord. His fellow operators shot upwards as the parachutes fully deployed.

"Fuck" Charlie thought, looking up at the space his chute should have been. Charlie flipped himself back belly down as he reached round for his reserve chute. The white of the snow covered landing zone now rushing up to meet him. Charlie's heart stopped a beat as he wrestled to grab the chord. He pulled hard and prayed.

The momentum of his fall fell off suddenly, but the altitude did not give the soldier much time to slow down. Accepting defeat, he lowered his bergen ready for landing, the bag trailing down beneath him. The snow rushed up from out of nowhere as Charlie committed to the role. A snow cloud filled his vision as he felt an intense bump shake his body. The wind caught hold of his chute on the ground, dragging him through the snow. Reaching for his knife, he cut the chute away.

He exhaled.

Looking up at the sky, he could see his comrades landing towards him. Charlie had survived this one. The safety team from the base's training Cadre tended to the bumps and scraps of the landing.

With the men reunited at the landing zone, the Operators moved to the next part of their objectives. Making the site safe for the first of the Airborne Regiment. Each 3 of the Sections took a side of the LZ each, the the HQ Section filling in for the remaining side.

As the C-130J returned to base, a further 8 C-130Js took off with their pilots and aircrew carrying the 1st Battalion, Canadian Airborne Regiment to the LZ zone. The parachutists ready for their turn to jump into the darkness.
