Guardian Alert Posture Condition (GAPCON)
GAPCON1 - MAXIMUM READINESS - Hostilities are underway or judged to be imminent, requiring continuous air defence operations, immediate fighter launch authority and full national defence integration.
GAPCON2 - VERY HIGH ALERT - An imminent hostile air threat is assessed, necessitating near-immediate scramble capability, expanded air defence coordination, and partial force mobilization.
GAPCON3 - HIGH ALERT - A credible threat to airspace exists or repeated violations are occurring, and fighter aircraft are fully armed, fuelled, and held at immediate readiness for rapid interception.
GAPCON4 - ELEVATED ALERT - Intelligence or situational indicators suggest a potential threat, requiring increased monitoring and the placement of designated fighter units on enhanced standby.
GAPCON5 - ROUTINE READINESS - Peacetime posture in which routine air policing and standard surveillance are conducted with no identified or credible threat to national airspace.

What does this mean?​

The Guardian Alert Posture Condition (GAPCON) defines the current level of air defence readiness in place to protect Swedish airspace. GAPCON is set by the Swedish Armed Forces, in coordination with the National Security Council and relevant government departments, and is based on real-time intelligence, airspace monitoring, threat assessments and regional security conditions. The system provides a graduated scale of readiness, ranging from GAPCON 5 (Normal Readiness) to GAPCON 1 (Maximum Readiness) and determines the posture, response time and operational readiness of aerial assets tasked with airspace protection. Changes to the GAPCON level reflect the assessed risk to national airspace and ensure that air defence forces can respond rapidly and proportionately to emerging threats. GAPCON levels may be adjusted nationally or regionally and do not, in themselves, indicate that the public is under immediate threat.​
